Calligram

Calligram Post

Artist Statement:

The piece shown above is my calligram, which is based off of a camera. This camera reads as a letter to myself for 20 years from now. I basically ask myself if I have succeeded in my life. I take on this roll not just to see if I succeeded academically, but also socially, which at times could be difficult for me. The camera is an accurate representation of me because a lot of the time I feel I live my life through a camera. Just like any other kid I would roll my eyes at my mom for trying to make me take pictures. But once I was in college I started to understand that taking those snapshots would be important. I could revisit those fun moments and capture a moment in time where I was happy or I saw something unforgettable.

Sketch and letter:

Dear future self,

I hope that this message finds you well. It’s been twenty years. I know that it is hard for you to remember certain things about your life, so I’ll help you out. You are a Junior at UT; you are an advertising and public relations major. You were dating the farmer girl from Springfield, MO. Things have been pretty good between you two and you were happy with yourself and how things were going right now. Classes are starting to get harder now, and the workload is tough, but you are managing well. You were taking digital media, media writing, communication and media ethics, and freedom of speech and first amendment studies.

I hope that you have been successful in all your endeavors and that you have found your true passions. I hope that you have found your dream job. I hope that you have a family and friends that keep you company, because I know that you can sometimes isolate yourself. I hope that you have traveled the world and have not sold yourself short of the life you deserved. I hope that you have learned to live for yourself without feeling regret. The list goes on, but I just hope that we have grown up to be the person we have always wanted to be. Are we working for a sports team, or an advertising company, or even a PR firm? What kind of car do we drive, do we have a nice house, how are mom and dad doing, did Cruz ever become a pilot like he wanted to his junior year of high school? More than anything I hope that we have become the best version of ourselves, we struggled for a long time, I think we owe ourselves that.

If this finds you well then keep doing what you must to get better. If this does find you at a bad time, just remember struggle is not permanent. We have a choice to wake up and be better. Get better so that we can accomplish the thing we have always deserved and worked hard for

Love,

Elijah Fernandez
